Entrepreneurship with Zero External Capital is possible!

Over 150 young people from Bujumbura province, according to 2025 new administrative division, benefited from training on entrepreneurship with zero external capital from 02 to 06 December 2024. Organized by EdSF Burundi Burundi, the training was carried out in partnership with NIYONGABO Foundation.

From the very first day, all participants flocked to the program, enthusiastic and motivated to discover the secrets of entrepreneurship without external capital. Some testified that they were certain that entrepreneurship with zero outside capital was possible, and just needed the ideas and strategies to make it happen, while others had their suspicions, and still others were more curious because they couldn’t believe it at all. This training couldn’t have been better timed. Indeed, many young people shared that they have lots of innovative ideas, but the big barrier is the lack of funding. They said they didn’t receive any funding or credit, which meant they were stuck unable to realize their dreams. Good points, in fact, which show that the training came at just the right time. Indeed, the organizers highlighted the motivation behind the training. “For EdSF Burundi, one of our objectives is to work towards fulfilling the potential of each young person. We believe that you have ideas, projects within you which you can realize with what you already have so that later, with the credibility generated, you can get support from banks or any other institution”, explained the Head of EdSF Burundi to the young people present at this training course.

The trainer captured the attention of participants by sharing inspiring success stories about entrepreneurship with zero outside capital, as well as necessary tips. He illustrated the possibility of launching a business without outside capital, relying on their creativity, their network and different technics. Young people had the opportunity to meet the various partners in this training program, who shared with them the opportunities available to them. Concepts such as e-commerce, savings, profitability and financial education were also discussed. The participants, divided into small groups, exchanged ideas about businesses that could be set up without outside capital. As some of them testified, they are beginning to realize that it is finally possible. They were able to understand that entrepreneurship with zero outside capital is a reality from which they can benefit.

Several group sessions enabled them to identify business ideas that could be exploited without outside capital. During presentations of the various projects, they were given tips on how to improve their sustainability and chances of success. During a panel session, participants also had the opportunity to exchange with delegates from banks such BCAB, BNDE, BCB and KCB. They were informed about the services offered by these banks for young entrepreneurs. But more importantly, these young people understood the relevance of this training on entrepreneurship with zero outside capital, since even these bankers confirmed to them that loans are only granted to activities that are already operational.

Entrepreneurship is a good thing, but it doesn’t stand alone. It requires sound values to enable the business to serve as a model and succeed. EdSF Burundi has shared with participants that, as young entrepreneurs, they must create an inclusive working environment, guaranteeing equality of rights, opportunities and access for all in the business world. These young entrepreneurs understood that it is vital to uphold their values by respecting all people, and that it is important to be actively involved in the fight against Gender-Based Violence and all kinds of discrimination. The session was followed by fruitful discussions, and young people committed themselves to the principles set out above. The training ended on a positive and dynamic note. The participants, now equipped with practical tools and knowledge, are ready to start their entrepreneurial adventure. Various coaches were also trained to continue supporting these young entrepreneurs, especially after their training.
